The Oklahoma Sooners, one of the favorites to win a national championship, suffered a serious blow to its chances when starting sophomore quarterback Rhett Bomar and starting offensive lineman J.D. Quinn were permanently suspended from the team. The Sooners are now right back where they were at the beginning of the 2005 season.
Without Bomar, Oklahoma is dreadfully thin at quarterback and with Quinn gone only one starter returns on the offensive line.
Last week at the Big 12 Media Days in Kansas City, Stoops glowed about his young quarterbacks future: "He made significant progress if you look at the first half of the season and compare it to the second half of the season and how he matured and the growth he made. And we expect him really to start the year in a good way and continue to improve. Because he has so much skill and ability."
But Bomar had a history of troubles at Oklahoma. He was cited twice for underage drinking and once for hosting a nuisance party on campus. Now comes the $18,000 he received for the little or no work he did at the car dealership.
Sophomore Joey Halzle, a junior college transfer from Golden West Community College in California, takes Bomar's spot at the top of the depth chart heading into preseason camp. He threw for 2,077 yards and 13 touchdowns in his only season of juco football and has three years of eligibility left.
Paul Thompson, who started at quarterback in the loss to TCU and then lost his job to Bomar and moved to wide receiver last season, and highly recruited freshman Sam Bradford are the other options.
