The turmoil surrounding the Cincinnati Bengals franchise continued as ESPN reported that linebacker Odell Thurman was suspended by the NFL for violating the leagues substance abuse policy.
The suspension, which had been rumored for much of the offseason, might explain in part the Bengals' decision to select former University of Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks in Thursday's supplemental draft.
Cincinnati officials and coaches knew that Thurman faced a suspension. At the team's minicamp in June, the middle linebacker was excused for what coach Marvin Lewis termed "personal reasons." And it appears the choice of Brooks, whose off-field problems have been well documented, was likely made to help compensate for Thurman's loss.
Landon Johnson will most likely take over for Thurman during the suspension. Thurman had an excellent rookie season in 2005, leading the team in tackles (105). He also finished with five interceptions and 1.5 sacks.
