NFL News and Notes

First it was Shaun Alexander, then Matt Hasselbeck sidelined because of injuries.

Now, it's leading receiver Darrell Jackson.

Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that Jackson would not be able to play Thursday night against San Francisco.

Jackson has turf toe, suffered on his last reception in the Seahawks' 27-21 loss at Arizona on Sunday. Jackson caught a 23-yard pass from Hasselbeck with 3 minutes 15 seconds left but didn't return for the rest of the drive.

Holmgren had no timetable for when Jackson, Seattle's leader with 63 catches for 956 yards and a league-high 10 touchdown catches, might return. Nate Burleson will start in place of Jackson.

Cleveland Browns safety Brian Russell remained hospitalized because of an elbow problem, a probable recurrence of a skin staph infection that doctors believed they had removed from his arm during surgery more than three months ago. The Browns put Russell on injured reserve, ending his season.

Coach Romeo Crennel said doctors were awaiting results of cultures and couldn't confirm whether Russell was suffering from staph.

Russell has been dealing with staph — a bacteria that typically enters the body through scratches and scrapes — since the exhibition season. He is one of five Browns known to have suffered from staph infections in the last three years.

The Browns also said that defensive tackle Orpheus Roye will sit out the final three games because of a knee injury.

Indianapolis Colts receiver Brandon Stokley may be out for the season because of an injured right Achilles' tendon.

Coach Tony Dungy said he did not know the severity of the injury, but recently signed receiver Ricky Proehl said he expected to get more playing time after Stokley apparently ruptured the tendon.

Stokley has sat out most of the season because of injuries. He has eight receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Oakland receiver Randy Moss is questionable for the Raiders' game against St. Louis on Sunday. Moss was injured in the Raiders' 27-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Detroit running back Kevin Jones will not play at Green Bay on Sunday, and Lions officials are concerned that a foot injury he suffered in the Lions' 30-20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday could keep him out a lot longer. Jones has 689 yards rushing and six touchdowns, and a career-high 61 receptions for 520 yards.

Two Devin Hester kick returns for touchdowns stole the show and set an NFL record and the Bears (11-2) clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs and stepped closer to home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Rams, who have now lost seven of their last eight, fell to 5-8 on the season. Hester had kickoff returns of 94 and 96 yards for touchdowns, his fifth and sixth of the year, breaking the NFL record.
