College Football Notes: Week 6

The Southeastern Conference had its own Separation Saturday and what college football fans got was surprises, entertainment and a new power shift in the conference.

No. 5 Florida served notice not only to the SEC, but the entire national scene that the Gators have their bite back. Florida improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1996 with a convincing 23-10 victory over No. 9 LSU. Freshman Tim Tebow passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, while the Gator defense forced three Tiger turnovers.

The biggest change in the SEC was the upset of No. 2 Auburn at the hands of Arkansas, 27-10. The Tigers lost for only the second time in three years to a Southeastern Conference team. RB Darren McFadden keyed the upset of the week with 144 yards rushing and a TD. It was the first touchdown given up on the ground this year by Auburn.

No. 13 Tennessee, down 27-24 after three quarters, out-scored No. 10 Georgia 27-6 in the final frame to improve to 5-1 on the season. The loss was the first of the season for the 5-1 Bulldogs.

Vols QB Eric Ainge was 25-of-38 for 268 yards and two touchdowns, while RB Arrian Foster ran for three scores for a much improved Tennessee squad. Georgia turned the ball over four times, three in the second half.

The Red River Rivalry wasn't much of a game as No. 7 Texas dominated from the start and handed No. 14 Oklahoma the 28-10 defeat. Freshman QB Colt McCoy was 11-for-18 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The Longhorn defense forced four turnovers and held Adrian Peterson (109 yards) in check for most of the contest.

No. 16 California has been very impressive lately. Since an opening day loss to Tennessee, the Golden Bears have reeled off five straight, including Saturday's drubbing of No. 11 Oregon, 45-24.

QB Nate Longshore was the sparkplug, going 14-for-26 for 190 yards and four touchdowns. Backup running back Justin Forcett ran for 163 yards and a score. The Cal defense limited the Ducks (4-1) to only 69 yards rushing.

One more top 25 team suffered defeat this week and that was No. 17 Florida State. The Seminoles fell 24-20 to North Carolina State on Thursday as Wolfpack QB Daniel Evans threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns. The win puts NC State (3-2) on top of the ACC Atlantic standings.
